Altura is an art gallery and studio space located in one of the oldest neighborhoods in Los Angeles: Lincoln Heights. As an interdisciplinary collaboration between visual arts, music, and fashion, Altura will house a variety of exhibitions and events in an effort to bring together local artists and the community. The amplification of voices with no outlet is necessary for exposing problems and highlighting achievements. As a branch of that effort, The Altura Podcast will be that opportunity for a deeper enlightenment and understanding through discussion and interviews hosted by a changing combination of its founders.

The Tijuana artist walks us through his current solo exhibit at Altura LA called “El Album.” Omar also opens up about his creative process that stems from his love for music, the origins of his well know “wolfie” characters, the fears of locking into a branded content as well as some insight into his collaborative efforts with some high profile musicians.

The “El Album” exhibit is up until November 12th. Email us to book your appointment: info@altura.la

Altura Ep 6

On this episode of the Altura podcast we sit down with print makers Pavel Acevedo (@pavel_acevedo) and Viktor Rosas (@ima_cheesecake2). Along with graffiti artist, poet and painter, SEK (@sekcess), they are both in the “Beauty and Fear” art exhibit curated by Summer Bernal (@smb2719) at Altura LA. The guys join us down the street in an El Sereno backyard to speak on the theme of “Beauty and Fear,” how making mistakes makes you a better artist, shouting out the spaces that nurtured their love for printmaking, how characteristics of duality are more than expressed in this exhibit but how they are in the craft of printmaking itself. With both of these men being from different parts of Mexico, we had to ask about some of the contrasts between here and there, then and now. And heads up, keeping n theme with duality, we go back and forth in the podcast between English and Spanish.

Duality comes in twos, opposites and many variations. For example: up and down, love and hate, war and peace, or like the exhibit at Altura LA, it's named after: “Beauty and Fear.” On this episode of The Altura Podcast we sitdown with “Beauty and Fear” exhibit curator Summer Bernal and graffiti artist, musician, late-night walker, poet and painter, Sek. Summer talks to us about why duality was the theme of choice for this show, the reason for bringing Pavel Acevedo, Viktor Rosas and Sek together for the “Beauty and Fear” show, and her curatorial decisions when finding art and artisits for shows. With Sek being born and raised in Lincoln Heights he speaks on why it took over a decade to get his art back up on local gallery walls and his efforts in changing gentrification into integration by way of representation.

Welcome to The Altura Podcast!

As a branch of that effort, The Altura Podcast will be that opportunity for a deeper enlightenment and understanding through discussion and interviews with artists, friends, creatives, and partners. Hosted by a changing combination of its founders, Diego Guerrero, Adrian Huerta, Eduardo Gomez, and John Acevedo.

Our guests on this episode of The Altura Podcast are Melissa Dueñas and Valerie J. Bower. Well established, multifaceted makers of media compressing a roadtrip, photography and writings into the pair’s 4th zine release called “From Phoenix to San Antonio.” To go with the exhibit and zine release here at Altura LA, we’ve curated a pairing of podcast and artist to expand on the content and stories you might not get from just picking up their zine. What was a marketing assignment that ran parallel with personal southwest intrigue the two ladies sit down with Diego and Adrian to speak on many points from their trips and zines. The girls explain why they trekked between Phoenix, AZ to San Antonio, TX, how they are redefining Americana by being female people of color doing white American man things, and some readings of writings in the zine with many back story tangents. There is also Valerie’s constant need to stop for animals that we obviously have to discuss, Melissa’s family connections to where the border bends, and much more. All while drinking tea and watching Speed.

We find epiphanies through papusas, we also find the benefits of Altura separating monetization from true storytelling and of course we have to give out “flowers” to everyone that helped in the development of Altura.
Diego, John, Eduardo, and Adrian have added partnership to friendship with the creation of Altura, Los Angeles. The balance of amplifying voices, and telling necessary stories that overturn common narratives is tough. Instead of listening, interpreting and relaying with the possibility of error, why not create a space that allows first hand experiences to express themselves? In the first Altura podcast, the guys get together (rare) to reflect on the process of starting Altura, accidentally finding space in an old movie theater from the 1930s, insight from brainstorming to build, finding inspiration from the hard working seem-stresses in Lincoln Heights that would eventually become our neighbors and first guests of our first show, Palindromo.
