The original speaker was unable to attend, so we got invited to step in. The other guy was going to talk about balancing life and faith and work and all that, but Gevie and I don’t do that well (I bet you can tell by the frequency of this Podcast episode release dates) so we decided to give the talk on Love Marriage and Dating. About 60 or so young adults came and we had a blast. Hope you enjoy it too!

I started a new job with the Archdiocese of Las Vegas! Woohoo! Neil and I talk about my new job, then the state of Youth Ministry and Confirmation and we make arguments for and against restored order 66 (lol, you’ll get it if you listen). This led us to talking about the importance of Youth Group as growth in discipleship.

The conversation turns to formation for adults and young adult formation in the diocese and turning the emphasis to small group communities that lead to events rather than events to form small groups and how this might actually encourage continual growth.

I’m drinking nothing but water while I teach this class on the Sacramental Economy. I take a quote from the Catechism (CCC 1131) and break it open showing the Old Testament prefigures, how Jesus perfect it, and how through the Holy Spirit all that belongs to Jesus is given to us for his glory (Jn 16:14). I close off with the reciprocal nature of the Sacraments, how we are not mercenaries working for blessing, but rather we approach the sacraments in the spirit of thanksgiving and in the obedience of Faith.

It’s a nerd one, so if you like the nerdy Catholic stuff this is the episode for you. Neil and I will get together soon to record a new one for you!

In this 2 parter we first talk about our good friend and Bishop GLT and his opening address to the conference including the 5 goals he would like to accomplish during the Eucharistic revival. Then we briefly discuss Dr. Scott Hahn’s evening Keynote after our good buddy Garret brings us a couple glasses of wine “the finest wine of Idaho”. Key take away is that the Eucharist was a “Sacrament before it was a document” great line!

There are two fantastic interviews here in part 1, the first with Tim Glemkowski, the Executive Director of the National Eucharistic Congress, and the second with the Diocese’s own Anna Forsberg, the Director of Children’s Ministry at Holy Spirit Catholic Church. With Tim, Neil wasn’t there so I interviewed him about the Eucharistic revival and how to keep it from just being an event and how we can make it a catalyst for something in our lives. Anna talks with Neil and I about Sabbath rest and she recommends a book called The Relentless Elimination of Hurry

Trickery and going back in time to prevent it seems unsatisfying, but the power of love and friendship seems unsatisfying in these situations too. We need a better story here.

I ask the question as to whether or not we teach Chastity wrong. We attempt to teach Chastity but most people hear abstinance which is problematic because abstinance leads to puritanism, shame, and fear, whereas Chastity is supposed to lead to freedom, love, and fullness of sexuality.

Neil had a baby! Well not Neil, Neil's wife Lisa. But Neil was definitely involved! Neil's Baby was born on 9/13, and Gevie and I moved to a new house on 9/13.

Between new baby and unpacking and repairing we've been too busy to get together long enough to record something! So we (by "we" I mean Neil was loosly involved) decided to piece together some of our content that gets left on the cutting room floor when I edit. There's some fun stuff here, we talk Podcast, movie, Star Wars, and debut a section we call "Neil's Comic Corner!"

In this we we drink Innis & Gunn, but since we were also playing a drinking game we switched to Gordon Biersch's Hefeweizen, but forgot to talk about it. Oops. Any way we talk Tolkien, but not just Lord of the Rings, but all Tolkien! It's a long one, but there is so much to this amazing Catholic author I couldn't bring myself to cut much!

When one of the big three from LOTR (Frodo, Aragorn, or Gandalf) are mentioned David takes a drink.

2019 Steubenville Retreat in San Diego CA!

I put our Tuesday after the retreat recap at the beginning of the show. We talk about the good, the bad, and the ugly at the retreat while drinking gin.

The rest of the show is our blog through the retreat, we begin on Friday when the bus arrives and we check into our dorms. Later that night we recap the retreat kick-off, the next evening we review Saturday's events, highlights being running out of hosts at morning Mass (yikes!), the terrible men's and dating talks, and the evening talk and adoration that successfully salvaged the day!!
