At St. Anthony of Padua, we have the invaluable gift of a plethora of saint relics in the Our Lady of the Angels Chapel. However, there's a good chance we might be just glancing over how much of a game-changer their presence really is in our faith life.

This past week, we announced four exciting new relics that would be joining us, including the relic of Saint Gemma Galgani, a young Italian mystic who lived an inspiring life. On this episode of Beyond the Bulletin, Jay Martin takes a walk back through what a saint relic is and why their important (even while being occasionally gruesome) as well as looks into who Saint Gemma is, what she did during her life, and how we can grow in our own faith through her witness.

We have a lot of feast days in the Catholic Church - we celebrate people going up to heaven, coming down from heaven, when they died, when they were born, etc. But the feast of Corpus Christi is one in particular that stands out: our belief that the Eucharist is truly the Body and Blood of Jesus -- not merely a symbol -- is the source and summit of our faith. Unfortunately, it's also a drastically declined belief among too many Catholics. Which is why this year's feast of Corpus Christi is all the more important.

Jay Martin unpacks this feast day, looking at its origins, previewing the uniqueness of our upcoming Eucharistic Procession, explaining more about the Eucharistic Revival, revealing one of the four upcoming saints coming to our chapel, and more. Tune in!

Fr. David Hust preached how we, as faith-filled citizens, can bring honor and justice to God, vote with a clear, Catholic, conscience, and do our part to bring order to a disordered world.

And a reminder: if you are struggling with this message or find yourself believing some of these ideologies that were discussed and maybe didn't realize were intrinsically evil - know first and foremost that you are loved. And it’s precisely because you are loved by God and us that we are called to oppose the ideologies, because these ideologies don’t lead to happiness and human flourishing.

On July 13, 1917, an apparition of Our Lady occured in Fátima, Portugal. It was an incredible moment that came with two special requests from the Virgin Mary - the consecration of Russia to her Immaculate Heart, and the Communion of reparation on the First Saturdays. For Katrina Leyden, a long-time parishioner of St. Anthony, the second request was one that required action.

Using our parish as the founding site for a new way to fulfill this request, Katrina helped create a unique and efficient way of making it easier for the Catholic faithful to make the First Saturday, and this apostolate has now spread around the world.

Katrina sits down with Nate to talk about her fateful trip to Fátima, what a Communal First Saturday looks like, and much more. Tune in now to learn about this incredible prayer opportunity here in The Woodlands!

With how much we know about Saint Francis of Assisi, it can be hard to grasp an accurate picture of the great saint. We know more about him than any other medieval saint, but all of the awe-inspiring stories of him – founding the Franciscan Order, preaching to the birds, receiving the stigmata, and becoming one of the most venerated religious figures in Christianity – all flow from one source: living the gospel life demonstrated through the utter and complete charity of Jesus.

The fingerprints of Saint Francis are all over this project - his influence helped form other saints whose relics will be in the Our Lady of the Angels Chapel, which of course takes its name from the famous chapel he rebuilt in Assisi. In that chapel, the once flamboyant party boy was on the path to seeking sanctity, and he heard the voice of the Lord clearly - "Francis, go and repair My house, which you see is falling down."

Facing persecution throughout his life due to being “il Moro,” or dark skinned, he chose to be a peacemaker, and is remembered for his racial tolerance.

At the age of 18, young Chiara Offreduccio heard the powerful words of St. Francis of Assisi while he was preaching at a Lenten service in town. She was so moved by the idea of pursuing a life after the Gospel, that she did what any sensible person would do: run away from her wealthy, noble family to join a religious order, cut off her hair, and when her family tried to make her return home, cling desperately to an altar until they give up. After a life filled with a passion for poverty, leading others closer to Christ, and defending her monastery from invading armies, Chiara would become Saint Clare of Assisi, an incredibly inspiring and resilient Italian saint.

The life of Saint Thomas Aquinas took place amidst a rapidly-shifting historical time period. But when a young Thomas Aquinas finally escaped from the castle his family had been holding him captive in (a story which you MUST hear), he set off to bridge the gap between faith and reason, and would go on to become one of the greatest philosophers of the world, a Doctor of the Church, and most importantly, a saint.

St. Frances Xavier Cabrini encountered hardship and difficulty at nearly every turn of her faith journey, but she was undeterred from following the will of God. The first American citizen to be canonized a saint, she was fearless, resourceful and passionate about serving those in need.

Care for Creation Team FAQs:

• When did the group get kicked off?

o Our first meeting was in June and we’ve had one meeting a month since then.

o While doing climate advocacy I became aware of other parishioners interested in Care for Creation and Pope Francis’ call to be better stewards of creation

• Any goals?

o We’re starting slowly to avoid getting discouraged with a large project

o Initial interest was around recycling. We then became aware that the market is presently in flux, so must consider market conditions

o We’ve talked about how to educate/ inspire parishioners about choice - reduce/ reuse/ recycle is but one aspect

o Possibly educational event(s)/ Laudato Si’/ discussion groups

• What opportunities have come up?

o Many Catholic creation advocacy groups exist. For example we’re considering joining Catholic Climate Covenant (USCCB sanctioned) but need to do our homework first and then get parish approval. Mary Queen is the only other parish in diocese that has a registered CCC Care for Creation Team

• Biggest opportunity is the upcoming Sisters of Charity World Day of Peace Ecumenical Service on Sept 7, 2019.

o We’ve been in touch with the Sisters and their Director of Social Concerns, Monica Hatcher. Monica and Sr Ricca found out that we had started up a CFCT and asked whether we could help get the word out

Dr. Lambert has practiced in traditional Western medicine for over 25 years, in both an outpatient clinic setting and hospital care. This model has powerful diagnostic and therapeutic modalities, which are often effective and lifesaving. Clinical experience, however, has shown some limitations. These limitations usually arise when a patient’s symptoms defy a specific diagnosis based on a lack of laboratory or radiographic data. While studying eastern medical traditions and learning acupuncture, Dr. Lambert was able to see this aspect of patient care through an alternative lens. Many symptom complexes became clearer. Every Lent the Church asks three things of her members: prayer, fasting, and almsgiving. These are three spiritual disciplines that actually grow your faith. But often our parishioners are heard saying how they wish they had a better prayer life, or a better relationship with God, or a deeper Catholic faith – yet they do not know where to start. A few “Our Fathers” here or a Scripture reflection there – and they soon give up the effort. This year we are asking all our parishioners to join together to Give Up, Pick Up, and Offer Up the same things for Lent 2019. Through these spiritual disciplines and practices your personal faith will grow, and so will the unity of our Church community. Our prayer is that we can hold each other accountable to growing in virtue and holiness this Lenten season as parish family.

Episode 14: Episode 14: The Four Last Things

We discuss the Four Last Things- death, judgment, Heaven and Hell- and clarify a bunch of myths and misunderstandings, especially as it touches upon Catholic funerals. A funeral is neither a sacrament nor a sacramental, but a sacred liturgy whereby we pray for the repose of the soul of the dead and worship God together.

It is not a canonization Mass, though it is right and proper to remember and celebrate the good that our loved ones who have passed on did in his/her life. That said, funeral Masses are offered for their sins and attachments to sin.

Also, we are all afraid of death, but our fear of death should be obliterated by the Paschal Mystery of Jesus Christ. Check out Hebrews 2:14-15:

14 Since therefore the children share in flesh and blood, he himself likewise partook of the same nature, that through death he might destroy him who has the power of death, that is, the devil, 15 and deliver all those who through fear of death were subject to lifelong bondage.

Fr. Tom introduces Principal Tucker! — Veronica’s leadership skills and passion for faith-filled Catholic education are evident in her academic background which includes a B.A. in Pre-Professional Studies and Theology from the University of Notre Dame, an M.A. from the University of San Diego, and a Catholic School Leadership Certification from Creighton University. Additionally, Veronica will complete her M.S. from Creighton University in May 2019. Veronica has served the Diocese of Fort Worth for the past 12 years and is eager to join The Woodlands community this summer. While at Notre Dame, Veronica met her husband Aaron and together they have four children. Their oldest, Abby, will be a freshman at Frassati Catholic High School in the fall. Luke will be in 6th grade at St. Anthony of Padua. And her youngest two, Joey and Davidson, will both be in Kindergarten at St. Anthony of Padua.
Our Parish School — Founded in 2001 as part of the Catholic parish of St. Anthony of Padua, we serve students in Pre-K3 through 8th grade in The Woodlands, Texas.
History of the Catholic Church in the United States — Meanwhile the Catholic population continued to expand. By about 1776, it reached approximately 25,000 in Maryland, Pennsylvania and New York State alone. Not long after the American Revolution, John Carroll, cousin of Declaration of Independence signer Charles Carroll, saw his dream of a Catholic college take root with the 1789 establishment of Georgetown. The Bill of Rights, with the First Amendment guarantee of religious freedom, helped Catholics further cement their place in post-Revolutionary America. John Carroll was appointed prefect of the United States of America in 1784 and bishop of Baltimore in 1789. Baltimore, the premier see, or first diocese in the country, was elevated to an archdiocese in 1808. Archbishop Carroll died in 1815. (There are now 195 Catholic dioceses and eparchies in the United States, with some 450 active and retired bishops.)

Josélito is a 20th century saint who was martyred by the Mexican government during the Cristeros War at only 14 years old for refusing to renounce his Catholic faith. His relics will be on display in The Woodlands and Houston in mid-October 2018.
