This week, we sit down with Richard Rosas Sr — artist, entrepreneur, removable specialist, and the man behind one of the most creative workflows we’ve heard in a long time. Richard’s journey starts in Lancaster, Pennsylvania, where he grew up moving between nine schools, discovered a gift for fine art, and even earned a scholarship to Tyler School of Art and Architecture — which he turned down out of fear of becoming a starving artist. After a detour into computer programming, granite engraving, and even opening a salsa dance studio with his mom (yes, there’s a South Beach nightclub moment that changed everything), Richard eventually answered a tiny newspaper ad asking, “Are you an artist?” That question led him into a dental laboratory and launched a career that would blend creativity, discipline, faith, and serious removable skills.

Under intense mentorship and PTC-style training, Richard sharpened his craft in removables, eventually managing a department and earning enough respect that doctors specifically requested him chairside. One large account even pulled all their cases after Richard pushed back on unrealistic deadlines — only to return weeks later with deeper respect and loyalty. That experience shaped his philosophy: honesty, communication, and quality always win long term. His path then led him to ClearChoice Dental Implant Centers, where performing four to six arches a day gave him next-level surgical and prosthetic experience. It was there that the real lightbulb went off — immediate impression evaluation, real-time patient interaction, faster turnaround, and true collaboration between surgeon, prosthodontist, and technician completely changed his view of what was possible.

Now Richard has taken that high-efficiency, patient-centered model and built something entirely his own: a boutique removable lab with a fully functional, patent-pending mobile on-site dental laboratory inside a Mercedes Sprinter van. By bringing the lab directly to private practices, he combines multiple traditional appointments into streamlined visits, delivers final dentures in as little as two weeks, processes chairside in the parking lot, and markets not only to dentists but directly to patients. His mission isn’t just to make dentures faster — it’s to elevate the technician’s role, strengthen patient connection, and show that removables can be both efficient and beautiful. This week we finally sit down with the one and only Matthew Douglas — technician, educator, denture-setting machine, former Affordable legend, past DLAT president, and all-around force of nature out of Texas.

Matt’s story starts with baseball. A promising career cut short by a hip injury (the “Bo Jackson thing,” as he calls it) led him to find a different path — one that started at TSTI in Waco and ended up shaping thousands of dentures, dozens of labs, and one of the fastest-growing state dental lab associations in the country.

From living in an RV at the end of an airport runway while in school… to learning how to tear down porcelain ovens and rebuild lathes… to mastering ambidextrous denture setups with a soldering iron (yes, really), Matt built his foundation the old-school way. And he built it fast.

What began as a job delivering cases quickly turned into a full-blown passion once she stepped inside the lab and saw what technicians were creating. From trimming dies and waxing copings to managing labs, supporting implant surgeries, teaching doctors chairside, and leading removable and implant teams, Helen shares a journey built on curiosity, persistence, and a deep drive to understand the why behind everything in dental technology.

Helen talks about working her way through crown and bridge fundamentals before discovering her true passion in removables, dentures, implants, and occlusion. After getting real-world lab experience, she attended dental technology school, studied all six specialties, and continued expanding her knowledge through advanced occlusion training and continuing education. All good things must come to an end. No, not this podcast... but the recordings we got while with the AMAZING people of exocad at IDS 2025. It was a wonderful trip and we got to meet and talk to a lot of fantastic people from around the world. This week is no different as we meet a married couple that met in a lab, married, and now own a lab. Agata Bak is from Poland but went to London to find more opportunities for dental technology. Iman Ansari is from Iran and also ended up in London. They both worked at the same lab and it took Iman a while to win Agata over, but he did, and they fell in love. After getting married and working at a few other labs, they put everything on the line and opened Black Pearl Dental Lab where they specialize in high end fixed work.

Then we meet the past President of exocad North America Larry Bodony. Larry recently retired but still stopped by to tell us the awesome story on how he got the job when at IDS 2011. Taking a chance on a new design software and them taking a chance on Larry, set into motion of growing exocad in North America. It took time and work, but soon exocad was gaining popularity. Larry talks about those early years, his use of "reverse" tradeshows, and now that he is retired, working with another new exciting software Bite Finder.

She was plastered on the walls of the exocad booth 20 feet tall because she was one of the "Heroes of Digital Dentistry" and her journey is astounding. Dr. O'Connell talks about learning that Cerec was harder than it looks back in 2007, learning to work with amazing labs, using exocad to help her sell treatment by using the ART function, and a very concerning trend in the UK that makes it harder to be a dentist.

First up is Björn Zäuner. Björn grew up in a dental family and wanted nothing to do with teeth. We've all heard this story, right? It wasn't long before Björn had a milling center and even an ortho lab. But he noticed that miss mounted cases were a problem and a main cause to most of his remakes. So he developed Bite-Finder to use AI to find the true bite and not the one "captured" with a blue bite or iOS scanner. While in Maryland during school, he meets his wife and takes a job with a implant company and that's how he into dental. That company was a reseller for VHF mills and that is how he found them Dr. Rohde talks about moving back to Germany to run the US division, what sets their mills apart from others, and why they take the time to have their own CAM software to run their mills.

Then we sit down with someone from Ivoclar that has a lot to do with their success, Tobias Specht. We start the episode with Amy Tate who joined her uncle a year ago at nexus dental laboratory because she saw all the amazing places it has taken him. Now enrolled in a 3 year online course, a mentorship, and also working in the lab, Amy is all in with dental technology and shares her hopes for the future.

Then we chat with Rami Gamil, who years ago saw a need for dental technology in Egypt. After getting a degree in it in France, Rami now owns multiple locations called TriScan that provides iOS, CBCT, and bunch of other digital services to local dentists. His next focus is all about education.

We wrap up the episode with the dental technician to Denturists, Pam Rehm. Growing up in Canada, Pam spent a fair amount of time in a dental chair. Back in March, Barb & Elvis traveled all the way to Cologne, Germany to set up and record at the biggest dental show in the world, IDS. A special thanks to exocad for giving us the space to record so many amazing people over the course of 4 days.

First up is a dentist turned exocad designer, Hajir Shamil. Hajir talks about dentistry in Iraq and how she went to school just outside of Russia. Going back to a country that is hard to find a practice, she goes about working at a lab and falls in love with the "purple program". Then we chat with Daniel Portal and Gerson Prada. Daniel has a history of working with but eventually opened his own lab doing only designs for labs and dentists. Creating good culture in a dental lab is not easy. It takes dedication from owners and managers to set the path that the lab can follow. Two brothers both went through the apprenticeship program with John Archibald in the 90s. Darin Swartz was instantly hooked and opened up Swartz Dental Arts in the basement of a dental office after graduation. Followed by his younger brother, Mike Swartz graduated and opened his own lab. You would think they would partner up, but for 15 years they ran separate labs in the same space. After seeing technology coming into the industry, it was time to partner up and create Diamondhead Dental Lab. They talk about doing their own apprenticeship program, growing to 40 employees, creating a culture of partnership and quality, how they stay relevant in ever changing workflows, and staying true to their "North Star"

Photogrammetry is not new to dental. Years ago Kamil Zborowski brought the first units to the United States and even that first case worked perfectly. Growing up in labs, Kamil got into technology very early and was fascinated by the workflow. Not knowing removables, photogrammetry was his entrance to full arch implant workflows.
